Is there a Right way to Write????
Sorry this is a late post. I was in Oregon and away from a computer but I hope that you all find my blog fun and enjoyable as well as informative.:) While reading the essays I noticed two things... they were both valid points, but can people just start to agree with each other??? That would make life a whole lot easier for the rest of us!! (sarcasm!!!) Well anyways, I enjoyed the comment in the second essay, "But art, the art that matters, is not cement. It is mobile, complex, elusive, disturbing." this really stood out in my mind because this is what we have been taught for years. "Dig deeper into the meaning," "what does that represent," and so on. Teachers have been melting into our heads, in my opinion, the right way to analyze a text. But according to Will, one is just supposed to take the text at face value, without delving in or interpreting the novel on a more learned level. Literature, to most, is art. There is no one correct way to interpret it. if we all had the same thoughts on a matter, there would be no need for personal opinion. with no personal opinion, there is no individuality, with no individuality there is no person. We might as well all wear white overalls and have green hair like an oompa loompa! no one would be able to say, "those overalls look dumb" because everyone has them and there is no opinion. The same is true with literature, different interpretations lead to new discoveries about the hidden meaning in older novels, plays, etc. To be honest I could almost care less either way, i like oompa loompas. but if we want to progress as a society, we need different thougts and interpretations.

hahahah nice oompa loompa reference. got homecoming on the mind? :) I couldn't agree more with what you said. As we have discussed numerous times in class, I think it is stupid for us to have to read something and interpret it one way. Then pass a test according to someones' opinion of a book. Where is the individuality? I don't want to be a oompa loompa! The arguments in this article reminded me of the multiple choice questions we do, which we all have different opinions on. I agree that literature is art, and we should have our own opinions and thoughts on it. They say we are free but it seems as if we are not free to our own thoughts on learning. I really liked the quote you used in the beginning. It definitely sounds like what we have been taught all these years in school.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading youre response I must agree with the points you made. People must dig deeper into the meaning of the literature we read. We have always been taught to look for a deeper meaning and see what it really means. We cant just sratch the surface after reading a story, we must get deeper. I must also agree that there is not only one way to look or read something. To become smarter and learn more we have to read and interpret many different ways. Our society would not be as developed and what it is today if we didnt read literature as we do. I liked the oompa loompa comment and how everyone would be wearing all white overalls because it reminded me a lot of 1984 how teh society had a sort of "dresscode".
ReplyDeleteSo this is pretty much my favorite post ever, Megan! You're such a silly goose! :) Anyways, we had very similar feelings on the articles I discovered. We even used one of the exact same quotes! I agree 100% when you say that art is like literature (because that's what I wrote too! :)) We can interpret it however we want to, and all literature should not be read in one certain way. Your oompa loompa analogy was amazing! It actually made a lot of sense! Haha great job, girl! :)
